Sony responds to PS3 shortages

IGN has posted an interview with Dave Karraker, the Senior Director of Corporate Communications at Sony Computer Entertainment America, in direct response of the recently announced PS3 delays in the PAL territories. The reason behind the delay, is basically the same as we reported earlier. Here is a direct quote from Mr. Karraker.

The main contributing factor to the delay in the launch in the SCEE territories was the lack of sufficient supplies of the blue laser diode. As we move along, month over month, we will see increased efficiencies in the production of these key components, thus increasing supply. We are confident in our 6 million global projection by the end of our fiscal year.

There will be 400,000 units release in North America, and 100,000 released in Japan. Sony is sticking to it’s figures of 6,000,000 units shipped for the fiscal year, despite these delays and possible shortages. Again, quoting Dave Karraker:
We are confident in our 6 million global projection by the end of our fiscal year.

So, let’s hope that Sony is able to ramp up production without there being any major flaws with the systems upon release. If you want to read the entire interview, it can be found here.
